Chapter Thirteen
Coy Jones, 27
Charleston, South Carolina
Shooting Guard for the Denver Mountaineers
âIâm so excited to surprise Willa tonight, but also to see some more of her passion. We had a connection on that first night, and Iâm getting to the point where I need to know what that connection means.â
The bar on Main Street of Little River was pretty tiny. It was dimly lit, with a long counter running alongside it and about half a dozen tables scattered in the narrow space between it and the far wall. At the other end, opposite the door heâd led Willa in through, was a stage, with the curtains drawn at the moment. The bar was empty, except for the bartender, sitting on a stool behind the bar messing around on his phone. He looked up as Willa and Coy entered and waved.
âThis is so small town, right?â Willa said, gripping Coyâs hand and leaning into him. âEating dinner at a bar and listening to the music.â She nodded toward the speaker where a slow country tune was playing. Coy almost laughed when he realized it was one of Taggart Duboisâ songs. âDo you think he played here?â Her voice took on that same worshipful quality that had him laughing most of the afternoon as she poured over the little museumâs documenting of Taggartâs early career.
âProbably,â he said, letting that smile come back.
Tag Turner. He let that name roll through his thoughts along with a flash of Bellamy in the kitchen with her mom and Roxy. Would there come a time when thatâs how he would know the country star? Tag was married to Bellamyâs best friend. Coy wanted to laugh every time Bellamy would scrunch up her nose at saying âTaggart Dubois.â To her, that wasnât his name.
Thinking of Bellamy also had him thinking of the way she chewed on her lip when he talked about the first part of his date with Willa. What wasnât she saying about Willa? He got why she wouldnât tell him. Coy had seen the show too. Maybe he hadnât analyzed it the way she had, but he recognized that she worried about talking about the other women and how gossiping would reflect on her.
âCoy?â Willa tugged on his hand and looked up at him.
He shook Bellamy out of his head. âYeah? You wanna dance?â he asked. This was part of the plan to surprise Willa with her personal concert.
âI do love this song.â She grinned up at him, sliding her arms around his neck as he moved to sway with her to a song about the perfect life as viewed from a front porch swing. Coy had an idea of exactly what porch swing Taggart Dubois was singing about and he couldnât help grinning at the idea that he had nearly kissed a womanâa dang near perfect womanâon the very front porch swing the country singer crooned about.
âItâs a good one,â he agreed, resting his hands on Willaâs hips. She leaned in closer, laying her head against his chest.
